Derrick was the last Coffee High School player to play collegiate sports. In high school he played offensive lineman and linebacker. He was named to the Times Daily All Area Football Team in 2002 & 2003. He also placed 2nd in the discus throw in the 2004 5A State Track Meet and 5th in the 2003 meet. At UNA he was an Academic standout and went from walk-on to starter. He started 5 games his freshman year, all games his sophomore and senior seasons, and missed much of his junior season due to medical reasons. His career numbers include 75 total tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 2 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble and 1 blocked kick. His Awards include: 2006 and 2007 Academic All-District, ESPN the Magazine All-District IV Team, UNA Academic Player of the Year; 2008 First Team All Gulf South Conference and Academic All-GSC (one of only 14 UNA players to receive both), All-Super Region 2, All Daktronics DII All Region Team, Academic All-District, ESPN the Magazine All-District IV Team, UNA Academic Player of the Year, UNA Academic Hall of Fame, and a National Semifinalist the National Football Foundation Honor Society Draddy Trophy. In 2008 his team set a new school record. They were the first senior class to record 10 wins in four consecutive seasons.
