Archer

Betty started shooting archery in February 1964. In only seven short months she became known as one of the most outstanding female archers in the south. By September 1964 she won the Southeastern Women’s Field Championship, the Southern Regional Championship, the Alabama Target Championship, and the Dixie Invitation Tournament. In 1965 she won the Southern Women’s Field Championship for a second consecutive year. She became the first female to win the Silver Arrow Invitational beating out more than 100 archers (men and women). She placed third in the National Freestyle competition with a score of 879, showing up the old pros. She was Alabama’s Archery Association top female shooter three out of five years. She was one of the south’s best archers.
