He still holds the Alabama state record for most consecutive state championship cross country championships with four, while at Brooks. He also led the Lions to the state cross country championship in 1981, his senior season. He also excelled on the state level in indoor and outdoor track. He won over 20 medals at state track and cross country meets and became a nine-time state champion. He was the overall winner of the TimesDaily Tennessee River Run five consecutive years (1982-1986). He was the Road Runners Club of America national champion in the 10K run. He earned a scholarship at South Alabama, where he won numerous honors. After two years, he transferred to UNA and was the team's most valuable runner both seasons. He later became cross country coach at UNA and had two women runners qualify for the NCAA national meet.
