Gray, Dick

Gray played on the first basketball team at Mars Hill Bible School in 1959. As a sophomore he averaged 11 points per game. As a junior, he had 19 points per game and over 30 points per game as a senior. Included in these totals were 56 and 48 points outbursts in single games, and a spot on the annual North-South All Star Team. He lettered in basketball for two years at Freed Hardeman University but his track skills were equally impressive. In his first high school meet, he broke the Alabama Relays broad jump record in Tuscaloosa and never lost in the broad jump in a meet in his high school years. He won back to back broad jump state championships setting a then school record of 22'1" in the long jump and 10.3 time in the 100 yard dash at Oklahoma Christian University. He finished his last 2 college years at OCU and was named NAIA 1st Team All-American in track in 1966. His long indoor and outdoor jump records stood for 23 years and his 400 relay (413) and 800 (1:25.2) still stands today.
