As a member of the Shoals Christian School inaugural teams in the AHSAA, in 2002, Sam and his teammates, spent the first two years building their teams. He was a three year starter on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. The team’s hard work paid off during his senior year. All of his teams enjoyed success and he led the way. In football he passed for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 12 touchdowns on the ground. The Times Daily named him player of the week six times. He made Honorable Mention at quarterback for The Times Daily All-Area 1A-3A Team. In basketball, he led his team to a Class 1A Area 14 Championship. He averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game, scoring in double figures in all 26 games his senior season. He made Honorable Mention on the Times Daily All-Area 1A-3A Team as well as Honorable Mention for the Birmingham News 1A All-State Team. In baseball his team won the area championship and advanced to the 1A State Championship game. They brought home the red map in the schools third year of competing in the AHSAA. Sam played pitcher and short stop. His earned run average was 2.11 with 108 strikeouts in 92 innings and 6 one hitters. His 15 victories in a season, and 21 consecutive wins, both still rank fourth all time in the AHSAA record books. He averaged .423 at bat in the nine state playoff games. He was named as a starting pitcher to the Times Daily All-Area 1A-3A Team and the Alabama Sports Writers Association 1A All-State Team.
