Haraway, Michael
Lauderdale County High School
Haraway, A 1975 graduate of Lauderdale County High School, was a standout on the gridiron for his entire career at Lauderdale County. Haraway started every game on both sides of the ball for the Tigers from his sophomore season and was one of only two players who started on both sides of the ball as a senior on the 1974 state championship team. Haraway was later voted the most valuable player on his 1974 team by his teammates. The 1974 Lauderdale County football team is the only team in county history to win a state championship in football. Hall of Fame coach Ray Hester recalled Haraway as a tough, hardnosed leader for the Tigers his entire career. Hester also said defensively Haraway had an unbelievable instinct for the ball and led the Tigers in tackles from his linebacker spot from his sophomore season until he graduated. In an interview about his performance Haraway once said “We played as a team, there was no jealousy from anyone. It was a great bunch of guys.” Haraway was coached by Earl Grisham and Ray Hester who are both members of this Hall of Fame. One of the 1974 Tigers most memorable moments came in an overtime win on November 22, 1974, vs. Crossville. Coach Hester recalled Haraway scoring the go-ahead touchdown on the first play of the overtime and then made 3 of the next 4 tackles to seal the win for the potential state champions.
