Burrell-Slater

He was a three sport standout at Burrell-Slater High School 1962-1966. As a point guard in basketball he averaged 14 points per game and had many assists for Moses Brewer, who went on to play for the University of Denver. He was an All Area and All State selection in 1965 and 1966. A sprinter for the track team he ran the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds, 220 yard dash in 22.5 seconds, and the final leg of the 440 relay. He played safety on defense and quarterback on offense. In 1965 and 1966 he threw 14 touchdown passes and ran for 465 yards. Single game highlights include 7 interceptions with 3 resulting in touchdowns against undefeated rival Leighton Training School. He was selected to All Area and All State in 1965 and 1966. He walked on to play football at Florence State Teachers College in the fall of 1966. He was not allowed to travel with the team because there were no other black players in the conference. In 1970 he led the U.S. Naval Shipyard (San Francisco, CA.) to the Area Championship in eight man football. In 1999 he played in the Senior PGA Tour National Qualifying Golf Tournament. He played professionally on the Heartland Senior Golf Tour 1999-2001.
