Burrell-Slater
He played football and basketball at Lanier High School. He started at point guard for two seasons, leading his team to a 40-5 overall record during the two years. He was also the leading rusher and scorer for the football team in his junior (1951) and senior (1952) seasons. He later played at Alabama State University. He made a bigger mark as a coach, spending ten seasons at Burrell-Slater and seven at Coffee. He was head football, basketball and track coach at Burrell-Slater from 1959 through 1969. He was head basketball coach at Coffee for four seasons and also served as an assistant football coach. While at Burrell¬Slater, he had 11 consecutive seasons without a losing record. His team won 50 consecutive regular season games between 1964 and 1966, producing a 50-2 overall record during the two seasons. He had a 271¬104 overall record at Burrell-Slater, with his teams finishing second in the state twice. His football teams posted a 62-19 overall record.
