Coffee

He went from All-American football player at Coffee High School to become a highly successful college football coach. He was a halfback on three Coffee teams, and won All-American status during his senior season in 1957. He was also on the track and baseball teams. He signed a football scholarship at Auburn and played there 1958-1962. His first coaching job was as defensive coordinator at Columbus High in Georgia in 1962. He became head coach there in 1964 and led his team to an undefeated season. He coached under Shug Jordan at Auburn University from 1966 until 1973. He coached one season under Paul Dietzel at South Carolina before going to the University of Georgia for four seasons under Vince Dooley.
