Perkins, George

Central

George Perkins was a four sport athlete at Central High School from 1961 through 1964. He played guard and forward for the basketball team, helping lead the Wildcats to a 73-13 record and 2 county championships during his final three seasons. He averaged about 12 points per game during the three¬ year period He played left field for the baseball team but is better known for his no-hitter in 1963. He was a triple-jump champion and won numerous 100 and 220 yard sprints as well as broad jump competitions. He started four seasons for the football team, including the last three at running back. At one point the Wildcats won 29 straight games. He went on to start at slot back at Florence State in 1964 and was switched to running back the next year where he led the conference with 699 yards rushing. He was the team's most valuable back in 1965 and most valuable lineman in 1967. He won the junior high county championship as a coach at Central.
