Smith played football, basketball and baseball at Burrell-Slater High School where he averaged nine strikeouts per game and played in the North Alabama High School Association All-Star Football Game.
He was a teacher and coach at West End High School for nine years where he started all of the athletic programs with his first basketball team playing on an outdoor court.
His niche was as a referee where he served in some capacity for over 30 years. He became a fixture locally and also in the state where he officiated 19 state basketball tournaments. He also officiated in the junior college ranks as well as the Gulf South Conference where his "signature" was his patented traveling violation call.
Smith is retired from the Lauderdale County school system where he was a textbook supervisor for over 30 years. He also started the annual Allen Thornton Memorial Golf Tournament for the county.
