He lettered three years in basketball at Lexington High School, with two of those teams advancing to the state tournament. Averaged 17.6 points and 8 rebounds as a senior and chosen to First Team All-State squad and to North-South All-Star game. Lettered five seasons in baseball, starting as a pitcher and also played in the infield and outfield. Selected to East- West All-Star game twice. Also ran track two years. After Graduation signed with Marion Military Institute, started two seasons on squad that featured three SEC players. Became All-Dixie Conference pitcher and was ream captain and MVP. Led conference in wins with six. Transferred to UNA and was a starting guard as a senior. Averaged 10.3 points per game and hit nearly 90% of his free throws over two years. Led the Lions baseball team with a 6-2 record and pitched two two-hitters. Became assistant basketball and baseball coach at Coffee and was head coach of girls basketball team for four seasons.
