Woods, Robert

Lauderdale County

Woods racked up All-County and All-State honors in football and basketball in the 1967-68 seasons at Lauderdale County High School. He was a dominating lineman in football and averaged an astonishing 24 points and 16 rebounds per game on the basketball court. At Tennessee State University, he was an offensive line-man and team captain in football and was a small college All-American in basketball. He was named to the National Football League All-Rookie Team in 1973 as he anchored the line for Joe Namath and the New York Jets. In 1977, he moved to the New Orleans Saints for [our seasons, played for the Washington Redskins for one year and in the United States Football League as a member of the Birmingham Stallions and Memphis Showboats. He started his coaching career at Colbert Heights High School, moved to Kentucky State and Tennessee State in the mid-1980s and served in the same capacity at Hibbett School in Florence from 1985-93. Since 1993, he has been assistant coach, athletic director and teacher tit Overton High School in Memphis.
