He was an All-Area basketball and baseball player at Mars Hill. He was the Times Daily’s Most Valuable Player in both sports in 1993, and was chosen first team All-State by the Birmingham News in 1992and 1993. He scored 2,047 career points for a school record. He set a single season school scoring record with 823 points, and finished with a 27.4 points per game average. He scored 47 points in a tournament game and had 50 points in a regular season game. He signed a scholarship to play basketball and baseball at Itawamba Community College, averaging 13 points a game in basketball, posting a 7-4 record as a starting pitcher and batted .330. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, but opted to move to Shoals Community College where he was 6-0, with a 2.58 ERA. He earned a scholarship at UAH where he recorded the first win and first shutout victory in school history. He had a 12-9 career record at UAH.
